Elena “Babe” Celestre Griffing lived a life filled with purpose, compassion, and an unstoppable work ethic. Born on March 28, 1926, to Giorgio and Maria Celestre in Berkeley, California, she was the youngest of nine children and affectionately known as “Babe” by her family—a nickname that stuck with her throughout her life.

Babe’s life was defined by her unwavering dedication to everything she did. She embodied a pioneering spirit through her career at Alta Bates Hospital, where she worked for an incredible 75 years. She gave her all every single day, never cutting corners and always holding herself to the highest standard. Her advice to younger generations reflected her own life philosophy: “You give it the old heave-ho and put in your absolute best—every day—so that you never have to apologize for the work you’ve done.” As Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s longest-tenured employee, Babe took only six days of sick leave in her 75-year career—a remarkable testament to her work ethic, determination, and joy in her work.

On May 9, 1953, Babe married the love of her life, Donald Griffing, in Reno, Nevada. Their marriage was filled with music, laughter, and countless nights dancing together. Babe’s love of music, especially Frank Sinatra, was a lifelong passion. She cherished her friendship with Frank and often credited hearing him sing live in San Francisco with giving her the strength to recover from a serious illness—a story she loved sharing with friends and family.

Babe had a remarkable ability to leave a lasting impression on everyone she met. As her great-nephew, Scott Celestre, recalled, “Anyone who interacted with her would walk away with a smile and disbelief with this ageless woman.” Whether through her work, her friendships, or her many acts of kindness, Babe touched the lives of countless people and is remembered fondly by all who knew her.

Babe’s warmth, humor, and fierce devotion to her family and friends will never be forgotten. She made the world brighter for everyone around her.
